Pro Makeup Tips from Bobbi Brown

“As you age, your skin texture changes and often becomes much drier. Here are my tips to feel better than your age.

1. Hydration makes you look instantly better. Make sure you’re hydrated from the inside out – drink plenty of water and use the best combination of creams and balms for your skin type.
2. Instead of an all-over foundation, use a spot corrector to combat redness around the nose and any other spots that need to be covered. This will create a more natural, even skin tone. Don’t forget to add blush.
3. Wake up your eyes by using eye cream, a brightening undereye concealer (I use Jones Road face pencils for a seamless application), and two or three coats of super-black mascara.”

Step 1: After applying your skincare and sunscreen, use a non-toxic makeup primer (such as the Yensa Beauty Essential Glow Tone Up Primer).

Step 2: Using a small amount of brightening concealer (such as Yensa Beauty’s Skin on Skin Concealer), cover up any redness or imperfections and illuminate your eyes by putting a small amount on the inner and outer corners. Blend in with a clean finger or damp makeup sponge.

Step 3: Lightly dust a translucent setting powder (such as Lawless Seal The Deal Loose Setting Powder) onto these areas to set the makeup. Go lightly, as you want your skin to still look dewy and fresh.

Step 4: To lift your face and give you a healthy flushed look, apply a rosy blush (I’m using the bareMinerals Desert Bloom palette here) to the high part of your cheekbones, sweeping into the hairline.

Step 5: To make your eyes look more awake and refreshed, apply a small amount of JONES ROAD Just a Sec (in pewter) to the eyelids. This gives a hint of shimmer while brightening the eye area. What’s great about this eyeshadow is that it’s not as sparkly as some (which ages skin), but yet it still illuminates the eye area.

Step 6: For a bright-eyed look, apply a few coats of mascara (such as JONES ROAD The Mascara) to the upper lashes only. I necessary, use a lash comb in between coats to remove excess mascara for a smoother application.

Step 7: For the finishing touch, apply a swipe of lip gloss (like JONES ROAD Cool Gloss in Golden Shimmer).

Clean Beauty: Facing The Future of Beauty & Wellness

As a beauty blogger since 2011, I’ve tried all types of products. But, in recent years, I’ve evolved into a clean beauty advocate, as I’ve learned how ingredients affect our health and well-being. Because of this, I’ve switched to non-toxic, clean beauty brands for my daily use. And, I do my best to discover and share clean beauty brands with you.

As stated in a press release from Bobbi’s new brand, “JONES ROAD’s code of clean beauty means that all JONES ROAD products adhere to standards even more stringent than those set by the European Union and are made without 2,700 potentially toxic ingredients, including parabens, phthalates, sulfates, PEGs, cyclic silicones, BPA, and EDTA.”

As I shared in past clean beauty guides on I&C, the EU bans thousands of ingredients, whereas the USA only currently bans 12. This means, as consumers, we have to be aware of what we’re buying, because the lack of legislation here means that we could be (unknowingly) using beauty products that aren’t good for us in the long-run. My goal by sharing this is to educate and empower you to make wise decisions about your health and beauty. Knowledge is power!

The more you learn about which ingredients are used to produce your beauty products, hopefully, the more vigilant you’ll become in choosing better-for-you brands and products. I also believe that the more that we, as consumers, support clean beauty brands, the more that chemical-based brands will start to change their formulations. So, really – we’re shaping the future of the beauty industry through the power of our purchases.

To celebrate National Clean Beauty Day, below are 9 of my favorite clean beauty brands that boost your natural beauty. From effective non-toxic skincare and haircare to all-natural makeup products, these are some of the best clean beauty brands and products on the market.

Clean Beauty Brand: Juice Beauty

As one of the first clean beauty brands that I started using years ago, Juice Beauty has always been one of my favorites. I was first introduced to their product line by an Ulta Beauty sales associate, who was very knowledgable about skincare. She recommended that I try their popular Green Apple Peel Exfoliating Mask, which is an effective anti-aging skin care treatment that utilizes fruit acids to slough away dead skin cells. It was designed to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, boost skin cell rejuvenation, and promote healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Since then, I’ve gone on to use and love several of their other products, including the Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Cleanser and the Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Liquid Lip.

Clean Beauty Brand: Burt’s Bees

Another clean beauty brand I’ve loved for years is Burt’s Bees. Their all-natural Lip Butters are truly one of the most hydrating lip balms ever created. Containing emollient-rich shea butter and natural flavors (such as lavender, vanilla, and clove), these sumptuous lip balms deeply moisturize lips and impart a natural shine.

Not only does the company use good-for-you ingredients that are non-toxic and eco-friendly, but they also are a cruelty-free beauty brand. While the “clean beauty” movement has become a growing trend in recent years, Burt’s Bees is renowned as being one of the pioneers in this industry, as they got their start in 1984. Clean Beauty Brand: Biossance

For everyday skincare, over the past few months, I’ve become a devotee of the clean beauty brand called Biossance.

Their Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil is one of my go-to daily skincare products when I clean my face. It thoroughly removes makeup, dirt, debris, and excess oil, while helping to moisturize and rejuvenate my skin. Because it contains powerful antioxidants (that combat skin-aging free radicals), it helps to promote youthful, healthy-looking skin. In addition to which, it also contains a plant-based squalane, which is a moisturizing ingredient.

A couple of their other clean beauty products that I love are the Squalane + Lactic Acid Resurfacing Night Serum (which I’m calling a “miracle worker”, given the rapid anti-aging results it provides), as well as the Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum.

Clean Beauty Brand: Purlisse

Created by Chinese-American actress Jennifer Yen, Purlisse was founded on the concept of Asian beauty wisdom. Jen says, “I created purlisse to share the beauty and spirit of my heritage. As a former actress, I spent hours under heavy makeup and bright lights and my skin paid the price. The quest to restore my complexion and confidence lead me to rediscover my grandmother’s Asian beauty secrets, which healed my skin and inspired me to bring her rituals to women everywhere.”

For protection from the damaging rays of the Sun, I regularly use Purlisse Blue Lotus Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Essential Daily Moisturizer. Suitable for virtually all skin types, from dry to sensitive, this clean beauty product contains good-for-you natural ingredients such as calming White Tea, anti-aging Vitamin E, moisture-boosting algae extract, and anti-inflammatory Blue Lotus. Some of the other Purlisse products I enjoy are the Purlisse Perfect Glow BB Cream and the Purlisse Match Green Tea + Lemon Detoxifying Charcoal Mask.

Clean Beauty Brand: bareMinerals

When it comes to non-toxic cosmetics, one of my favorite clean beauty brands is bareMinerals. From face makeup and setting sprays to lipsticks and beyond, bareMinerals is one of the pioneers in the clean beauty movement. Launched in 1995, the brand prides itself on creating “clean, cruelty-free makeup and skincare products that never compromise on performance. (Their) good-for-skin formulas are free of harsh chemicals and unnecessary additives and full of botanical extracts and natural minerals that help improve skin’s appearance.”

I regularly use bareMinerals mineral bronzers (which add a healthy sun-kissed effect without clogging pores), their skin-enhancing Bounce & Blur Powder Blush, and their glow-boosting Dew Mist Shimmering Setting Spray.

Clean Beauty Brand: Tarte Cosmetics

For eye and lip makeup, one of my other favorite clean beauty brands is Tarte Cosmetics. This cruelty-free product line is made with “high-performance natural” ingredients. Their products are formulated without harmful ingredients such as Parabens, Mineral Oil, Phthalates, Triclosan, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or Gluten.

One of the best makeup products from them is their long-wear liquid eyeliner (which is waterproof and smudge-proof). In addition to lasting for hours and defining eyes, it’s also super easy to use as it features a felt-tip applicator that makes lining eyes even more precise.

Clean Beauty Brand: Aether Beauty

For eyeshadows, I’ve fallen in love with Aether Beauty. Their non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free eyeshadow palettes feature beautiful shades that even infuse natural skin-boosting ingredients like crystal gemstones (such as Rose Quartz). These highly-pigmented eyeshadows apply evenly, last for hours, and are easily buildable. You can lightly apply them for a natural day-time look, or build up the color for a more intense look, suitable for nighttime looks.

Clean Beauty Brand: Divaderme Cosmetics

For lush, full lashes, one of my favorite clean beauty products is by Divaderme Cosmetics. Their lash-building fiber-based natural mascara not only makes eyelashes look longer and thicker, but it also helps to nourish lashes (as it contains hydrating argan oil). This mascara is my go-to mascara for everyday wear, as it quickly and easily makes my eyes look bigger and brighter.

Clean Beauty Brand: ArtNaturals

Last, but certainly not least, is a beauty-boosting natural haircare brand called ArtNaturals.

The ArtNaturals Shampoo contains purifying, cleansing, and stimulating natural ingredients such as tea tree oil, aloe vera, seaweed, and peppermint, this deep cleansing shampoo helps to eliminate oils and product build-up. Plus, it adds back essential moisture to the hair, leaving it feeling nourished and hydrated. It’s especially great for dandruff and people with dry, itchy scalps.
